Iceland is the best country for retirees wanting financial security, good healthcare, and a peaceful, happy life.

has risen in popularity over the past few years. And with so many options available to retirees, it can be hard to narrow down exactly where to go.

But there are a few things retirees always care about when choosing their new home: healthcare, quality of life, and how secure their finances will be in retirement. has been ranking the best countries for retiring abroad since 2012 based on a variety of criteria. Things like healthcare costs, life expectancy, and out-of-pocket expenses earn a score.

In Natixis' latest ranking, released in September 2020, the US came in at 16th place overall. Meanwhile, Iceland, Switzerland, and Norway took the top three spots. Here's how other countries around the world stack up for retirees. Finland gets top marks for quality of life, earning the highest score of any country on the list. However, negative interest rates and high taxes keep this country from hitting the top of the list.
