The controversial Family Court merger with the Federal Circuit Court is set to go ahead after the government won over key independent senator Rex Patrick.
Senator Rex Patrick will support the government’s planned merger of the Family and Federal Circuit Courts. But Senator Patrick says he now supports the merger with a promise from the government to ensure there is a minimum number of specialist family law judges. “It’s not a significant change but it does have some streamlining effects [for administration] and for that reason I’m happy to support the bill,” he told“There’s still a specialist ‘division one’ with Family Court judges and there’s still a specialist appeals court.
The Law Council released an open letter on Tuesday morning with 155 signatories from the family law arena, including 13 retired judges, imploring the government to drop the merger.
katinacurtis This is another demonstration of how women and children don’t count in the eye of the law or this government. The just don’t care.
katinacurtis Whatever happened to 'sick 'em Rex'? Looks like they wore you down and you caved on a promise? How disappointing for everyone🙄
katinacurtis This is terrible. I believe about 150 judges/barristers signed a petition to stop this. Why don’t we listen to the experts?
katinacurtis Shame on Patrick for towing the LP line & spruiking so many mistruths! Legal experts across the nation have warned that the merger will further endanger women & kids experiencing DV. Those who vote in favour ignore those of us who’ve buried DV victims. It's an absolute disgrace.
katinacurtis Disgraceful This will not assist families at all
