W5 investigates Canada's controversial practice of flying live horses around the world to be slaughtered for fresh, raw, horsemeat. The campaign to stop the live horse export has ramped up with the celebrity endorsement of Canadian singer Jann Arden, who calls it the 'sinister side of agriculture.'

CALGARY -- Canada - and in particular Alberta - is one of the world’s biggest suppliers of horses for meat. More than 25,000 are slaughtered annually. The meat is frozen and exported, mainly to Japan, France and the U.S.

The horses are flown almost weekly out of airports in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg. Their destination is 9,000 kilometres away in Kumamoto Prefecture, western Japan. Horse meat is a delicacy in Japan. The raw horse meat is called “basashi” and customers will pay as much as 8,000 yen or about $100 dollars a serving, in line with what Canadians pay for high-grade steak.

Canadian veterinarian Judith Samson-French explains why travel is especially difficult for horses: “Horses are not trained or conditioned for transportation. Horses are flight animals and we're treating them like cattle. It doesn't work. So from the humane point of view... and the biology of the horse, it does not make it conducive for transportation. Animals should be slaughtered where they're raised.

Stop animal killing

Damn. That’s stupid! Stop kill horse for meat!!! I don’t understand why did Canada Government allow trade for Meat. Damn. Stop kill fuck meat!!!!

Sinister ? Is the pig industry sinister ? No because pigs arent cute.

Meh. Just cause you give something a name doesn’t make it more important. Cows taste better but what’s the difference. Meat is meat

Humans are so evil. There is no need to eat animals of any kind as our bodies where designed to eat a plant based diet. Animal agriculture is the single biggest contributing factor to greenhouse gas emissions in the world that’s fact! But the narrative is controlled! Disgraceful.

We must stop this now!

Oh come on! Out of 25,000 horses exported in 2020 only 5 received some form of injury, one was euthanized and one other died in flight. I’m sure that the number of injuries to pigs, poultry and bovines transported in Canada to slaughter houses are many times higher.

Why Canada would support Japan and other Asian countries unethical and inhuman treatment of animals? These counties slaughter animals inhumanly, to eat a small piece supposedly to get a better hard on. They are responsible for endangering many species and causing disease.

In the words of Moe Sizlack 'If wishes where horses I'd be eating horse meat every night '.

Now do factory farming

All factory meat farms are ‘sinister’
