As it becomes increasingly clear that workplaces are a key transmission location in the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, some Canadian employers are offering paid sick leave to their employees in the absence of government action.

Paid sick leave benefits, which allow workers to call in sick without fear of losing a day's pay, are becoming a political issue across the country, especially in Ontario. The benefit is one of the measures recommended by a group of experts who advise the Ontario government on COVID-19 measures, but has so far been turned down.

The Canadian Press contacted 36 employers across the country where workers must be physically present, seeking information about their paid sick leave policies. Rival grocer Metro Inc. also offers paid sick days "to a number of unionized employees depending on their collective agreement as well as to a number of employees who are not unionized," said vice-president of communications Marie-Claude Bacon in an email.

Provisions include flexible work arrangements, temporary leave, and paid sickness and accident benefits, said Jennifer Wright, director of communications for GM Canada. Auto parts maker Magna International Inc. provides paid leave that can be used for vacation, personal use or if someone is sick, said Tracy Fuerst, vice-president of corporate communications, in an email.

Yeah, cause no one would abuse the hell out of that at tax payers expense 🙄

Let's be honest!! Everyone will call in sick!!they will say-i have a fever..what the employer do Just watch what you wish for!! Don't be surprised if disruption of supplies than is happening! You can't blame the gov anymore!

The sad reality is far to many will take advantage of it, ruining it for those who need it. We're in the generation of Me only!

this paid leave will be abused like not other freebie

It's been a problem for years and years. People going to work sick because they can't afford a day off. As usual, it took something serious for the government to start listening. Never proactive, always reactive.

Businesses can offer their employees paid sick leave. Doesnt require the govt to pass legislation. How about it LoblawsON ?

Ah, the Weston Family. The only family that could deny a disabled man a refund/exchange for faulty face masks last June. Haven't been back since. Well, it was Shoppers but the same company.

Cop out, either you want to work or not.

the cruelest party is pc ontario and any other right wing con parties sell out the most essential treasure of any land: the people Who do the conservative protect & ensure are thriving? The upper class. India just another example of right wing leader sacrificing people for $

Because they should be a basic right, not a political issue. Any employer with an ounce of humanity, decency or sense already offers them. All research shows they not only increase productivity, but that the cost of absenteeism is less than that of ‘presnteeism’.

If it’s for a Covid, you get a Covid test, and you prove it. We know the liberals andNDP want untethered sick days, so people can just have abundance of vacation time, like they gave the teachers...

I am a grocery worker. Do you have an idea what you have to give up to get sick days added to your collective agreement? I gave up other health benefits for sick leave. The company gave nothing for free.

fordnation you are responsible of this crisis. PaidSickDays DO IT NOW!

It’s about time .... I have friends that work in these kind of environment and makes me sick that they only have a few paid sick days when in the government the get a good amount paid days absolutely disgusting....

They can afford paid sick days as the tax payers bought their freezers, Trudeau helps his friends. TrudeauMustGo

Companies should be paying for sick benefits not the government

Large companies should step up. We all know Amazon can afford to. Government action is still required to make it mandatory and fill in the gaps (such as for small businesses and PSWs, etc).

Yep, employers need to do their part

Companies SHOULD step up. Why should my tax dollars fit the bill. I pay enough taxes!!!

Last time they 'stepped up', it was $1 an hour raise. They took that raise away. Can't imagine any essential worker who got that raise taken away forgot about it. Now tell them about this. Tell them and watch them laugh. ❤️

It's needed most for home care PSWs and lots do not have that benefit

Loblaws already gets lots of free money from justin

I work in health care and I don't even get one sick day I call in sick No fault of my own or not I loose all my hours

Stepping up? Providing a basic employment right?

Could be why a lot of these companies have a high turnover as well.

Loblaws using the fridge money 👍
