Hundreds of thousands of vaccine-hesitant Australians can now choose another jab with Novavax chief commercial officer John Trizzino hoping the newly approved protein-based vaccine could persuade the 5 per cent of the nation yet to be vaccinated.
“We believe that there’s still a significant percentage of those that haven’t been vaccinated, that just are looking for another option, looking for a protein vaccine,” Mr Trizzino told“They’ve heard a lot about our product and are patiently – or impatiently – waiting for that option to arrive.” Mr Hunt said his office and the TGA had been approached by many unvaccinated Australians indicating that they were seeking access to Novavax, even though the already approved Pfizer vaccine was “appropriate to vaccinate the entire population.”
TGA head John Skerritt said he had received “several hundred emails” from people who specifically wanted the Novavax vaccine. The company was working to submit safety data on Novavax’s use as a booster to the TGA, he said, with hopes that an approval could be secured within weeks. He said the vaccine had the potential to significantly boost vaccination rates in developing nations because it does not require cold chain freezer storage, which “makes for ease of transportation and ease of use.”
