Incorporating alternative investments in your portfolio can be a useful tool to protect it against downside equity market risk.

As we enter a new year, investors seeking higher returns are looking for new ways to continue to add value to their portfolios in a rapidly changing macro environment.

Alternative investments include private equity or venture capital, hedge funds, property, commodities and tangible assets. This asset class does not align itself with conventional equity, income, or cash categories. The flip side to alternatives is they are usually illiquid and can lose capital if the underlying assets go down in value by a large margin. They also tend to underperform rising equity markets.
