Automotive peak bodies say if Australia wants more stability in the cost of running vehicles, then an electric future is the way to go.

Industry groups say the federal government must encourage higher electric vehicle uptake to reduce the country’s dependence on oil, with fuel prices at record highs.

But electricity, unlike oil, was less unpredictable, Electric Vehicle Council chief executive Behyad Jafari said. Mr Jafari said the government should introduce fuel economy standards and invest to make elective vehicles more widely available as currently, supply is outstripped by massive demand.
