WASHINGTON—As Ontario Premier Doug Ford arrived in Washington, D.C. this week, the ongoing “People’s Convoy” here inspired by Canadian protesters remained aBut there’s something else inspired by the Canadian protest blockades that Ford would be hearing more about, and trying to address:that are feeding into already-rising protectionist sentiment among lawmakers in the U.S.

As Ford delivered that message in Washington, opposition leaders at Queen’s Park said Ford missed his chance to send a clearer message to the U.S. by more effectively dealing with the earlier protests. “This government could have been doing more a lot sooner,” New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath told reporters after the legislature’s daily question period.

Late last month during a visit to Washington, federal trade minister Mary Ng told reporters that her message to Americans was that the disruption showed just how important cross-border supply chains are and “how important it is for us to actually strengthen those ties.”including from Joe Biden’s White House
