The WA Liberal Party’s Curtin division agreed to dole out $40,000 to federal election campaigns before Kate Chaney ramped up her push to topple Celia Hammond.

One of the Liberal Party’s safest Western Australian electorates agreed to dole out $40,000 to federal election campaigns fighting to win other seats in the state, before a high-profile independent ramped up her push in its own backyard.

Under the WA Liberal Party’s structure, it has 16 divisions that are the same as the state’s 16 federal electorates , with suburban branches sitting underneath them.The minutes state that the Curtin division – which takes in Perth’s affluent Western suburbs – has about 700 members and branches are “encouraged to sign up new members”, with gold club memberships going for $500. Sources suggest membership has been notably higher in the past.

Senator Cash noted the hundreds of thousands of dollars raised by Ms Chaney for her campaign, including from Climate 200, and asked for $100 donations to “help local MP, Celia Hammond”.
