‘You just can’t make it work, you’re just haemorrhaging money,’ says pig farmer

Key components of pig feed – barley, wheat, maize and soya – have doubled in price since last summer. An already dire situation was exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which provides Europe and North Africa with large volumes of cereals.

Photograph: Alan Betson, Co Roscommon, Peadar Kelly’s piggery operation trundles on, like clockwork., began farming pigs in 1977, before he took up the mantle. His current operation is housed within a €1.5 million integrated pig unit, capable of holding 5,000 pigs from farrowing to factory.

Always having to artificaly heat the animals to keep eating & sweating off the fat to get lean meat !!

As opposed to pigs haemorrhaging to death in a slaughter house. If the slaughter of animals was publicly shown, meat eating would dramatically decline. No need for humans to eat meat.

Indoor pig farming is cruel. Why don't they get grants for wind & solar & convert into growhouses? Vegetables, or hydroponics, I mean... though I suppose they could apply for a licence to grow medical cannabis? 😎😀

Fantastic news. End the slaughter. 🌱🌱 go vegan.

Hopefully factory farming will end.
