No specifics yet on proposed locations, but option to renovate some or all of TCU Place appears to be on the table.

Brent Penner, executive director of Downtown Saskatoon, said he believes the city finds itself at a point similar to the situation it faced 60 years ago, when the railway tracks were taken out of the downtown. The move shaped the city’s core for decades to come and paved the way for Midtown Plaza and TCU Place.

that both SaskTel Centre and TCU Place are near the end of their useful lives. Since then, most of the city’s reports and other published materials have referred to a downtown entertainment and event district centred “on a new arena and convention centre.” Penner, who is also a member of the advisory group, suggested on Tuesday that there is now at least some discussion of keeping or renovating some elements of TCU Place.

“We need to make sure we’re competitive in the Canadian landscape,” Penner said, noting that most major Canadian cities now have more modern facilities than Saskatoon’s, most of them located in core districts.
