Sports betting companies threatened to abandon the Northern Territory, their traditional home in Australia, if taxes were increased, documents obtained under Freedom of Information reveal.

Sports betting companies threatened to abandon the Northern Territory, their traditional home in Australia, if taxes were increased in explosive submissions to government obtained by the ABC under Freedom of Information law.

The majority of Australian online sports betting companies are registered in the NT, making the Northern Territory the primary regulator of the industry in the country. The companies were responding to an independent review into the Racing and Betting Act by law firm HWL Ebsworth in 2018 that, among other things, suggested 20 per cent of labour costs of sports betting companies should be spent in the NT.

A third warned if costs were increased, "we believe it likely operators may choose to exit the jurisdiction or cease trading altogether". The NT government stated in January that "work has commenced on the drafting instructions which will be provided to industry as part of the consultation process".

This is an easy one. Shut every online gambling platform down. I can assure them their tax liability will be reduced

Far from less tax, these vultures should pay more.

i exert pressure on government to ban online sports betting companies

They ruin lives. All betting agencies should be shut down

Online betting and gambling is up there drinking and drug taking for the misery and illness it causes. That they can do exert pressure to obtain favourable tax treatment is an abomination

More money for advertising (for more mug punters). They never mention they get rid of, or curtail, winners, but encourage losers to bet ever increasing amounts.
