Opinion: For communities sometimes underserved by mainstream media, it’s a good day when a racialized journalist steps into a leadership role. Except when it happens under the circumstances Sachedina and LaFlamme found themselves in. That’s on Bell Media.

Angry reactions to the sudden ousting of decorated broadcaster Lisa LaFlamme from her job as CTV’s chief news anchor and senior editor haven’t abated.

What has been largely lost amidst the justified uproar is a full embrace of the channel’s first-ever racialized male national news anchor. For racialized communities, who are too often missing from Canada’s newsrooms, particularly in leadership positions, it feels impossible to celebrate this historic moment.

In Canada, we’re barely even catching up to the racial realities of our newsrooms, as the Canadian Association of Journalists pointed out last year in one ofThat survey collected race-based data on 3,783 journalists in 209 newsrooms and the results were disheartening. It found that almost half of all Canadian newsrooms exclusively employed white journalists, and that about nine in 10 newsrooms have no Latin, Middle Eastern or mixed race journalists on staff.

Who cares about race or gender. Pick the right person for the job. Why are liberals so obsessed with race and gender. division

I won’t watch him. Hope she gets a job with a competitor and takes her viewership with her. Love her grey hair

The Bell Media head honcho without doubt thought he was going to use a ‘diversity’ hire to both silence opposition and LaFlamme from speaking out. Gee do you think tactic was a little racist Mr BellMedia? What a disrespectful way to intro. the new anchor.

I don't know this guy. Different perspectives are good. In this case, his silence is making him a terrible guy, accomplishing exactly the opposite of what otherwise would be a great option. If I were him, I would look for another company.

Bell Media put him in a very uncomfortable situation.

every 'paper' spouts their own POLY views ... so git wit the program you are just a bunch of talking heads following the leader who pays yr BIG salaries UGH who the h cares

Not only Bell Media, Bell in general, is a “white” company, or so called Anglo-Saxon company in which, employees whose mother tongue is not English, got treated poorly, lack of recognition and lots of attitudes from demanding senior executive team.

Media has been racist against whites for some time now.

CTV is straying away from giving appropriate answers why Lisa Laflamme was fire .

'Racialized'.
