Ryder, the carriage horse that collapsed in a Manhattan street earlier in August, is now retired at a private horse farm outside NYC, according to the union that represents carriage drivers. But activists continue to call for an industry ban.

Worried that there may be other horses on the brink of collapse, Amy McCambridge-Steppe, CEO of Unbridled Horses Project, a horse sanctuary, carried out a “wellness check” on the horses at the Manhattan stable on Wednesday where recently-retired Ryder was reportedly being kept, sharing a“The stalls are way too small,” McCambridge-Steppe told Gothamist on Friday. “They didn’t have enough slack or room in the stall to turn completely around, and they definitely couldn't lay down.

“We see more Ryders in there, meaning that the horses are malnourished, very, very tight quarters by the way…it’s disgraceful, and horrible conditions there,” Holden said on “The Brian Lehrer Show” on WNYC Friday morning, reacting to the video of the stable. “Ryder’s not the only one, New York City’s better than this.”

“Horse owners are responsible for veterinary care for their horses and are required to have the horse examined twice a year. It is the examining veterinarian who certifies the horse is fit to work,” city health department spokesperson Patrick Gallahue said in a statement. “If information is intentionally misrepresented, those responsible will be held accountable.”

LIES RYDER IS LOCATED AT A SLAUGHTER FARM, SAVE HIM.

This is a lie Ryder located in a slaughter farm. Disgraceful. Union for drivers are nothing but lowlifes.

Yeah where is RYDER really ? Where is the evidence he is okay ?

Wait until we find out the truth. This is union B.S

Prove it!

This headline & story is misleading. TWU and the owners are refusing to say what “farm” Ryder is at. They have not allowed any advocates or any media to visit & verify that Ryder is at this supposed “retirement home”. catalinagonella

nyclass It’s still unbelievable Ryder was made to work in his condition - the prominent tail head & dropped-off croup, his withers w/ hollow spots, and not only does he NOT have a topline, he’s SUNKEN ABOVE his rib cage. He was abused, plain & simple.

This does not look like Ryder, how can we believe he was actually retired?

Thank goodness! We need to do away with that barbaric practice.

nyclass . what is the name of the farm or sanctuary where Ryder is now? What does 'retired' mean? They keeping it a secret, which is suspicious

nyclass No one can prove what the union has said, re: Ryder's retirement on a farm. Do not take this at face value. No details given

Probably the same farm where my family sent our dog to live when I was a kid

I hope my tweeting and petitions helped you peta

Need PROOF of Life! This report until proven is here say. Give the public proof this beautiful senior is alive !!! bellahadid NewYorker EquineAdvocates Carriage_Horses give us proofoflife

I met two men in new york that I partied with. We went to scores night club. On Sept 11 they took me to see an event remembered in history. We were under surveillance the whole time. My name is Bridget Clemens and I died because I knew about 9-11 ahead of time.

Ryder’s care needs to be monitored, imho. Ban this archaic practice. We do NOT need damned horse-drawn carriages in NYC in 2022, abused horses, and those carriages towering over everyone-God forbid a carriage gave out and toppled onto people. Electric sightseeing vehicles only.

Even horses leave NYC
