Executive Secretary of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution Lawson Naidoo says the Electoral Amendment Bill, which is currently before Parliament, does not facilitate free and fair elections

This is the view of the Executive Secretary of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution Lawson Naidoo. Naidoo says a constituency-based system, similar to that used for local government, is required to meaningfully accommodate independent candidates. The major issue raised by these groups around the Parliamentary process relates to the omission of the majority of recommendations made to the Home Affairs Portfolio Committee through the Ministerial Advisory Committee .The civil society group My Vote Counts says the Bill in its current form will not be able to comply with constitutional obligations.
