“Nikola has determined that the seat belt shoulder anchorage assembly on certain 2022 Tre BEV trucks could be improperly installed and create a weakened condition,” the company wrote in its report to the NHTSA. “The assembly as designed and installed could become detached when a load is placed upon it during use.”
Nikola said in a statement that there was one incident where the seat belt mount was not sufficiently secured on the Tre BEV truck, with no crashes or injuries related to the problem. Nikola is repairing the seat belt mount on 93 model year 2022 Tre BEV trucks, including sold and pre-series models. This seat belt recall impacts only U.S. models, not trucks sold in the EU.
The faulty part came from Iveco, Nikola’s European manufacturing partner that makes Nikola cabs in Italy. A Nikola employee noticed the faulty seat belt issue on July 18 during a pre-delivery inspection. The issue was reported to Iveco which said that final torque on the passenger seat belt shoulder anchorage was not installed to specification.
Nikola’s internal Vehicle Defects Committee issued a recall to replace the bolt, spacer and adjuster on all seat belts on Sept. 7. Nikola told the NHTSA that it was not aware of any warranty claims or customer claims due to the seat belt issue.
