EVs require millions more lines of code than gas-powered counterpoints and analysts agree few are better equipped to work on them than software engineers. The problem is, there are too few of them.

"Most companies I'm aware of have engineering centers in India that do nothing but write software," says Hyde, who's a former Ford engineer."It's like an assembly line."Gas cars are still major money makers for the auto industry. Soaring demand for Ford's new electric Lightning hasn't put a dent in sales for the classic F-150, which still roll off the assembly line every 53 seconds.

EVs are not about saving the environment, they are about saving the automobile industry. We need less cars, more public transport.

There is a shortage of software engineers? Seems that’s all anyone does these days if you’re not pushing papers on Excel spreadsheets or in the service industry.

I’m here. You just need to pay me! 💰

There are quite a few lines of unnecessary code added to EV's. For example: Fart noise sound effect in Teslas. Are fart sound effects necessary? No. There. Solved the problem.

EVs are NOT the future

Cheap gas hatchback vs EV: Costs $20,000 vs $60,000 500 mi range vs 300 mi 5 min refill vs 8 hrs New battery $100 vs $25,000 Zero range drop vs 30% range drop DIY repairs allowed vs prohibited Can't be remotely disabled

There are almost 8 billion members of Homo Sapiens on this planet and we can't train more of them to be software engineers? What is the issue?

Replacing suburbs with actual human scale housing development to reduce our reliance on cars requires no lines of code. As a software engineer that sounds like a better solution rather than hoping more people want to code for a living. It's not for everyone.

Then there’s those other little problems.

That is not true. EVs do not 'require' millions more lines of code than gas powered vehicles, look at a golf cart. The additional electronics and 'auto driving' software that are being added require millions of lines of code. They just want to import SEs to keep wages low.

More cs scholarships. Right now competition to get into the programs is so high schools like Purdue dont offer many scholarships for it, bc they already get enough apps. It's a national economic and security issue, so the country should help make it more attainable

Better get going, your at least 20 years late. We need to overhaul the education system ASAP!

All that ECU code for the emissions etc .... Really, lots more lines ?

Psst, if you're slinging code, you're a software engineer

Auto manufacturers should partner with their unions and technology suppliers to deliver meaningful training opportunities to their workforce. Unions should be proactive in polling their membership to identify candidates for these opportunities.
