At Orangutech Inc., new office on Metcalfe Street, the Ottawa tech firm has left cubicles behind, opting instead for a large, open, communal space.

"The whole office is physically designed for connection and collaboration in bigger groups. We’re asking people not to come in here and put their heads down and work as they would at home," Corey Bainerman, Director of People and Culture at Orangutech said.

Commercial real estate experts say they’re far from the only company trying to revitalize their space in an effort to fill the gap left in offices and the downtown core, but the amount of empty spaces is alarming. Some Ottawa employees who work in similarly renovated spaces say the change has been an incentive to come back to the office more frequently.

"A day, two days a week is still reasonable. I think, for what I do, I find we’re still more productive from home and more practical to keep the hybrid remote work," Nallek said.Others expressed concerns about commute times, separation from family and pets, and the potential loss of productivity.

Lame

The trend to open office workspaces is pretty old now. And those of us who had to experience it yearn to have cubicles back. Preferably soundproofed booths.

Wasn't that already a horrible, horrible thing in the 80s/early 90s?

Desperate move. Maybe people should work from home with all the rush hour traffic since the start of September. Would help the climate. They should repurpose some of these bldgs to be condos.

'We’re asking ppl not to come in here & put their heads down & work as they would at home...A day, 2 days a week is still reasonable. I find we’re still more productive from home & more practical to keep the hybrid remote work' Is this satire?

They can party at Bluesfest but can't go to work! Pfft

What do you mean “hopes … to spark office return”? They’re your employees—TELL THEM to get back to the office!

It's called Workplace 2.0 (or was 2.0 ~10 years ago) The Federal government has been converting office spaces to these design concepts for at least a decade now?

'Dear colleague, 40,000 people can attend sporting events. You can fly 12 hours unmasked. Covid is a mild cold. You have 1 week to return to the office or your employment at XYZ will be considered terminated' The CEO

Orangutan inc? Oh I see

Nope. In the government they call that “Workplace 2.0” and it was a disaster well before Covid came along. Let those who can telework effectively continue to do so.

Oh god many can’t work in wide open office spaces
