The walkway through the Company Gardens has been reopened after a lengthy closure following a fire at parliament in January.

This comes after the pedestrian walkway, directly behind the parliament buildings and Tuynhuys, was cordoned off for much of the year following a fire at the National Assembly in January. While razor wire and additional fencing still separate the gardens and government buildings, barricades and police tape, restricting direct thoroughfare to the public from the Mount Nelson Hotel to St George’s Cathedral, have been cleared.

The Gardens were first built as a refreshment station for the trade route that rounded the tip of Africa between Europe and the east.
