Parliament’s portfolio committees on Mineral Resources and Energy, Police and Home Affairs are conducting a two-day joint oversight visit to the North West to assess the extent of illegal mining in the province.

Over 20 firearms, ammunition and explosives were confiscated during the arrests in Stilfontein. Illegal mining is rife in the Stilfontein, Orkney and Klerksdorp areas. The department added that illegal mining is a criminal activity that not only impacts the economy but also compromises national security.

The Police Ministry says it is only through a concerted effort with other stakeholders that illegal mining can be curbed.
