Trey Basha, the president of the Chandler-based grocery chain Bashas’, told the Business Journal that his grocery brands could grow their footprint if the $24.6 billion merger agreement between Albertsons and Kroger deal goes through.
Basha, who has worked in the grocery business all his life and was raised by father, Eddie Basha Jr., who also worked in the business his whole life, has seen several major supermarket mergers and thinks his company is well-positioned right now. After the deal was completed, Basha said he went to dinner with Keith Knopf, Raley’s president and CEO, and Knopf asked Basha to stay on.
“I think it's brought a lot of stability because any time you have massive change — like a sale anywhere — people get nervous, Woodward said. “And because this company is so connected, I think there was even more nervousness. With Trey being here, that's created really stability in the organization.”At the same time, the grocery industry has not been very stable.
Because of Bashas' history and prominence in the state — it was founded in 1932 by Eddie and Ike Basha, Trey Basha’s grandfather and great uncle – Raley’s is keeping the Bashas’ name on its stores.
