Four years after the worldwide recycling market crashed, you may be surprised to learn it's making a comeback.YaphankAfter a sudden halt four years ago when China stopped buying United States recyclables, Brookhaven town's recycling center closed up shop.

"We have gone from manually picking things by hand and just sorting them by size to using technology to sort our materials using infrared light," said Kenny Rothwell, recycling manager for Winters Brothers and the Brookhaven Materials Recycling Facility."Every different type of plastic and every type of paper has its own market," Rothwell said.Plastics are made into new jugs, polyester and car parts. Cans become new cans. Cardboard becomes new boxes.

The company says 90 percent of what comes in now leaves as a recyclable material, but is this still a drop in the bucket?

GusoffTV Great report! I'm an extremely, careful recycler and it's frustrating to know that for every me there's about 99+ who don't care. There should be a nationwide standard. So many plastics that municipalities don't recycle, companies like Terracycle and Trex will accept.
