The city will be building a rail spur to open up access to the 600-acre Cecil Commerce Center, with the state providing a $5.5 million grant for the project.“This new rail track will make an inaccessible area of the industrial park accessible for businesses in important sectors like manufacturing and attract new businesses to Jacksonville from across the country,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said in announcing the grant.
The Cecil Commerce project is part of $66.5 million in state funds distributed through the fund this year. Last year, the same fund was used to provide $6 million of a $20 million roadway and utility work project being done at Cecil Airport, the part of the Navy-base-turned-industrial-park that is controlled by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority.
JAA considers the east side of Cecil Airport and Spaceport an ideal property to develop facilities for aviation and aerospace. The underway project is developing the roads that connect that portion of the spaceport to the western portion of the property as well as provide connectivity to 103rd Street.
