Matthew Haines threw the switch on his spectacular suburban light display on Thursday night – and made a Christmas wish for lots of silent nights between now and 25 December.

Matthew and Emily Haines have asked visitors to their huge display of festive lights, at their Fish Hoek home, not to annoy their neighbours this year.In the last five years, his efforts have raised tens of thousands of rand for good causes in the Fish Hoek area of Cape Town. For more stories,

Announcing this year’s switch-on in a Facebook post, Haines’ wife Emily said: “Please remember that this is our home and we do have neighbours. There will be no aggressive hooting from the street after hours for the lights to be turned back on. Yes, this has happened, and more than once! I won’t be tolerating it again!”

Fish Hoek residents who saw Emily’s post on Facebook setting out instructions for visitors expressed surprise that they were needed. “Gosh I have never seen such a list of rules which must mean that there have been issues in the past,” said Cherry Dely. “So sad because your family have become legends and deserve respect. I'm sure it will once again be a beautiful sight.”The rules include requests not to touch the lights, go past barriers or smoke.

Haines, 40, started his Christmas light collection when he lived in California and has expanded it steadily since returning to South Africa six years ago. “I always try to change it up,” he says. “People come from all over Cape Town, so I want to show them something different every year.
