After 53 years and more than 1,570 planes, the last Boeing 747 is set to roll off the assembly line

The once-groundbreaking jumbo jet, with the distinctive second-floor bulge, is perhaps the most notable and popular plane Boeing has ever built. It was even big enough to be used to ferry the Space Shuttle from landing strips in California to its launch site in Florida. And it is set to launch a new type of spacecraft by Virgin Galactic as soon as next week, after carrying it aloft under its wing. The 747 was once the choice of the rich and glamorous, and even royalty.

This last 747 will go to Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings\n \n , which will operate the plane for Swiss logistics company Kuehne+Nagel. Tuesday’s final plane will be flown to another Boeing facility shop for painting and other final details, before being delivered to Atlas early next year. Today there are only 44 passenger versions of the 747 still in service, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. More than half of those — 25 — are flown by Lufthansa.

Sadly, I’m a flightless duck. A lot of great trips on 747s though.

When I worked at the massive aircraft assembly building that Boeing has at their Everett factory, I loved walking through the 747 assembly line. Pretty awesome aircraft!

As far as i remember 747 model is kind of problematic one, many plane crashes had been happened becauee of it

Queen of the skies

Incredibly sad! A GREAT airplane!!

One of the finest pieces of human engineering! Boeing747

Does it really matter the plane will still fly for several more years

What is happening to this industry...!? Airbus A380 then, Boeing 747? Something must be going south fast.

Boeing sucks ass

The mass tourism industry is very harmful, but there are too many interests and it is better to look the other way, but destroying the conditions in which we can live is not smart, what good will all the virtual wealth do when they can't breathe?

The last competently designed Boeing airliner is rolled off the production line.

The most beautiful of all planes to ever fly in our skies. Wonder if there will ever be one like it.

Well I guess a democrat must be in charge

The end of the best era in aviation...

I used to have the joy of flying in these between Chicago and Tokyo regularly. It was an unforgettable experience.

Wow!!! Such a beautiful and safe flying machine... I never thought it will get to this.
