New 27 December public holiday welcomed in hospitality – with hopes for a last-minute surge

The just-declared public holiday on 27 December gives South Africans an excuse to travel and celebrate the festive season.

South Africans were only expecting to have 11 paid public holidays in 2022 – instead of the traditional 12 – thanks to Christmas Day falling on a Sunday. That, according to the Public Holidays Act, would usually see the public holiday shifted to the following Monday. But Monday, 26 December, is already a public holiday of its own: the Day of Goodwill.

This, the sectors say, is likely to see an increase in last-minute bookings, a trend which has already emerged in the post-lockdown environment.
