JUST IN | Some relief as Eskom reduces load shedding from Thursday | News24_Business

Stage 6 load shedding will be implemented from midday until further notice, Eskom announced.

"The refuelling and maintenance outage starting this week, as well as the long-term operation project of Unit 1 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, together with the October chimney failure that has forced three generation units offline at Kusile Power Station, will further reduce available generation capacity and significantly increase the occurrence of load shedding during the next six to twelve months," Eskom said on Tuesday.

There is currently 6 392MW on planned maintenance, while another 16 318MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. There has also been a delay in return to service of "numerous" generating units, spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha added. A generating unit each at Duvha, Grootvlei, Hendrina, Majuba and two units at Arnot Power Station, were taken offline for repairs over the past 24 hours.

Stage 2 load shedding will then be implemented daily from 16:00 throughout the night to 05:00 the following morning until further notice. The utility said that load shedding is required due to the high levels of breakdowns and the limited emergency generation reserves. A further three units at Kusile power station are offline due to October's duct failure and are expected to remain offline for months. Koeberg's unit 1, meanwhile, will generate at reduced output for the next three weeks. Eskom has 6 000 MW out on planned maintenance, with another 14 160MW out on breakdowns.

Stage 5 load shedding will be implemented during the evenings at 16:00 – 24:00 from Monday to Wednesday, and will vary between Stage 4 and Stage 2 during the day until Wednesday. Spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said this was due to a recovery in generating capacity and pumped storage dam levels. There is 4 887MW out on planned maintenance, while another 15 320MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns"Stage 4 load shedding was implemented at 05:26 this morning until further notice," spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said.

Load shedding has hit a record 159 days thus far. The utility’s forecast for the rest of summer and winter next year predict even more load shedding and diesel spend. Where we find ourselves now, it looks like a steep hill. We have accepted the challenge to improve EAF of our fleet.
