Customers are overwhelmed by the number of places where they now have the option to tip and feel pressure about whether to add a gratuity and for how much.

A new checkout trend is sweeping across America, making for an increasingly awkward experience: digital tip jars. You order a coffee, an ice cream, a salad or a slice of pizza and pay with your credit card or phone. Then, an employee standing behind the counter spins around a touch screen and slides it in front of you. The screen has a few suggested tip amounts – usually 10%, 15% or 20%. There’s also often an option to leave a custom tip or no tip at all. The worker is directly across from you.

The railroad company hired thousands of Black porters, but paid them low wages and forced them to rely on tips to make a living. Critics of tipping argued that it created an imbalance between customers and workers, and several states passed laws in the early 1900s to ban the practice.

No one likes tipping. End of story.

I get options to tip for farmers market vegetables lol

Easy, tip for good service rendered

Especially now because these servers are now making 15 to 20 per hour plus tips. The owner takes a cut in most places. 15% tops. If it's added to the bill already, I demand they take it off.

Cover EpsteinClientList you should be charged also for not exposing this. Politics to the side. Do what is right for once

Be normal like the rest of the world and pay your employees a decent wage.

Pay cash. Some of these places with the digital check-out screens typically don't have a tip jar sitting nearby. My question is: can the employee 'see' what you tipped immediately after paying with a card?

Oh, no, the pressure of somebody who can afford a $5 coffee being asked by a machine to throw a dollar at the poor person that prepared it.

Here’s a tip, if you work for tips, do a great job, or find another! No tips for crappy service!

The joke is how the percentage keeps going up! As a percentage, it automatically raises with the out of control inflation! People are so ignorant!

It's just an excuse to: 1. Add to job description to suggest there will be extra income 2. Hide the fact that most are on zero hours and min wage

As I frequently visit my daughter in the US, I am fully aware of the tipping routine. I always tip at least 20% in all eateries, with exception of places such as McD’s, BK, etc as I believe they are being paid around 10$ per hr. Even in the UK I tip, but not as high.

This is a distinctly American problem which comes from the grubby institution called the “tipped minimum wage” in the restaurant industry. One origin story claims it’s from the Reconstruction era when freed blacks had no wages and lived from tips. The legacy of slavery lives on.

thinks you can’t think, so they think for you.

what..? CNN is so done…

Here’s the easy answer: always tip. Even if it’s just a little, tip.

I don’t tip at Starbucks, but I enjoy semen in my coffee.

This is BS. A thinking adult knows when they revive a revive worth tipping for. These lame checkout pleas for tips are insulting.

I used to be a service industry practitioner. In my country, customers never tip waiters. People say consumers are God. Waiters should unconditionally serve customers to make them satisfied. Otherwise, they will be criticized and lose their jobs,

10%. Answered your question

What a brilliant strategy to shift the responsibility of paying YOUR employees livable wages to your Customers! We pay for the products & we subsidize the wages. Only a country that rose to power as a 'slave nation' & that continues to profit from slave labor would be like this.

OK Morons, let's break it down: Car wash - Yes, 15% to 20% Nice restaurant, sitting down, hopefully wearing a shirt with a fucking collar - Yes, 15% to 20% Truck stops to Perkins - Yes, at least 15% Anyplace with a jar on the counter - Loose change only Fast food - No

'Romania and Ukraine two sad neighbours'

Minimum 20% every.single.time.

They can’t make a decision about a TIP?!?!? If that’s their biggest problem, they should drop to their knees and give thanks to the Lord!

The tip is not obligatory, If the customer was served wonderfully may the customer according to his desire give a tip, and the amount is not specified, from $ 1 to a million.

'News'.

Gotta blame self entitled employees who already get a salary for the job they do yet they still expect and want more

Customers are overwhelmed. Because of tipping. You are overwhelmed because of tipping. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Pay staff a decent wage, some country that.

CNN will be soon be seen as the TheOnion with reversed rolls.

15% or less. More if it's phenomenal service. Like knock your socks off OMG kind of service than maybe 20%

Or companies could just pay a living wage and we get rid of tipping.

No pressure. Just don't tip. Things already cost too much.

So, CNN'S top news is people don't know when or how much to tip. How can anyone, including Democrats, consider this newsworthy?

If you’re at a shop that shows you the screen when paying for items you hit either no tip of the lowest amount. When you’re out to eat I do at least 20% depending on the attitudes

If all you are doing is ringing up my order you aren't getting a tip

Tip for good service. Did that guy hand me my bagel just right? How about the handoff of that burrito? 😂😂😂

Tipping... .what a stupid system!

Don’t worry none of your 7 viewers have jobs so they can’t tip

Don't tip. It's cancer. Crazy idea but maybe businesses should pay their people a living wage.

Aways tip for good service. These people getting rubbish hourly rate of pay.

I was a waiter for twenty years. Was paid $2 to $3 per hour because I received tips. The only person i will tipping is the one who gets paid well below minimum wage. Why tip someone now who’s wage is at or above minimum wage. No way.

Tip has always been optional...at least in the majority of the world

I'm curious what people tip at beauty salons? I still leave the 15%-20%, but I think it's crazy because the price are already high.

This is the fix to the generations of people coming up to up that can’t do math. Oddly enough the same generation who are screaming about paying everyone more for being useless in society

Talk about Iran!!!! IranRevolution MahsaAmini WomanLifeFreedom

You ether Tip the Staff or you Don't it's that easy ffs.

On the way to Lamard Bastak, one of the cities of Iran, agents of the Islamic Republic shot at a car in which the family was a passenger, and a 12-year-old baby girl named SahaEtebari was killed during these shootings! The Islamic Republic killed a 12-year-old child so easily!

These hard workers in these dire financial times…. Are you kidding? Tip if you can. It helps those who are being used by their employers.

I love giving tips but don't pressure me with a mandatory percentage for tips.

It’s simple. Always tip at bars, restaurants, salons, hotels and when you use a car service. And any service where people are at your service. They make the bulk of their money on tips.

It’s not my job to subsidize YOUR income. Blame your boss, or find a better job, ya bums

White people problems.

It’s OOC.

Ahh First world problems

That’s why customer service is a joke…we tip for everything, we tip too much, we tip because…not earned. It should stop and salary should be higher!

15%

My first job was working behind a pizza counter. My second job was serving tables. The two are completely different beasts. I completely understand tipping waitstaff. I don't understand tipping barista's. Want big tips? Take a job worthy of the tip.

Restaurants now have mandatory 20% “service charge” regardless of number of guests and then asks for another 18%-25% tip. Like what type of nonsense is that?🤦🏾‍♂️

You can always make your stuff at home 🤑

15 %

You tip those not making a minimum wage because they are supposed to be tipped. It maddening that I’m guilted into a tip after a kid hands me a sandwich.

Tipping spread after the Civil War as an exploitative measure to keep down wages of newly-freed slaves in service occupations. The railroad company hired thousands of Black porters, but paid them low wages and forced them to rely on tips to make a living.. 🙄🙄

Standard gratuity is 85%. If you can’t afford that, DON’T go to a place of service. You are LITERALLY abusing and stealing from the service staff if you tip anything less than 90%.

Overwhelmed? Just enter NO.

Tipping is a scam

Very nice like gandhi ji and coffee ☕ drinker.

Let’s just pay people living wages so they don’t have to rely on awkward, sometimes paltry, tips to pay their bills.

This? This is overwhelming people? This. People are broken.

15% tip the tax amount on your meal plus a bit..its not rocket science, just math.

It seems like minimum tipping amounts have kept up with inflation but the wages of the consumer have not.

The only time you should tip is at a restaurant when you’re being serviced. Even then I’m not a fan as they should just get an hourly wage. Take tipping out and we’ll all be happier

Wow, nice reporting 🙄 how about some real new. No... Nothing... 🤦

Tipping is an abhorrent practice that is the main contributor to Wage Slavery. Abolish it, in favor of dedent wages.

Businesses would rather guilt trip their customers than pay their employees a living wage.

Tipping is silly, no one gives me tips for doing my job...

I like the european model, where baristas etc. are proud of their work all on its own and are insulted by any significant tip. An adda boy is all that’s needed

Don’t tip anybody. Problem solved. I ordered 190 worth of groceries yesterday didn’t tip still got my stuff. The day before I ordered Grubhub no tip still got my food fresh. Don’t tip!! Let the companies pay them livable wages

Tip as much as you can!! I never do less than 20% but most of mine are higher. Don’t even make a purchase if you cannot tip afterwards.

it's against my religion....

In civilized countries tipping is exclusively done for extraordinary service delivered; not for just doing your job. Maybe US employers in the service sector should start paying their employees a decent wage - for a change 😱

None....? It aint a sit down restaurant now they just getting greedy

Chinese tip. (No tip) if you go to college to get a bullshit degree then suffer the consequences.

0, i pay enough for coffee

0

Tip? For making a coffee I paid for?

Nothing. Tips are for socialist commies

Whatever makes the difference between their wage and the minimum living wage in your area for the work that went into serving you. Plus maybe 10% if you want to provide incentives for good service in the places you frequent

The corect answer is $0 dollars. A simple thank you is suficient for worker's in the service industry as it encourage's them to find a real job that actually benefit's the nation and society, such as a share holder, a ceo or a crypto trader

America should join the rest of the OECD and pay bar staff, and similar low paying jobs, a decent wage. Stop screwing over your workers!

Stop this

$1 for each drink. If everyone gave that, they'd do great.

Never understood this tipping culture. It's the same as giving money to a beggar: instead of solving a flawed system, you help to you uphold it.

Absolutely nothing... I make my own coffee and it doesn't cost $5 a cup. And I can afford to pay my bills too... Go figure.

Nothing

Ask me that when this RECESSION IS OVER.

Nothing. They make wages just like I do. I don't expect caterpillar vendors to tip me for doing my job putting together tractors.

Is this a international news article?

not tipping them just because their home could have been built by cheap illegal labor. who else rolls their eyes at a free quarter in a jar? screw these coffee makers

Can you give us more information on how Burisma tipped some Americans? We heard some information, but not all.

As much as you tip the construction worker that builds your home or office. As much as you tip the mechanic that fixes your car. As much as you tip the janitor/housekeeper that cleans up after you. So on and so on.

If it were me and they served well, I would tip them 500$

$1 for every drink is a good rule of thumb and they will be happy with that. If I get regular coffee at Starbucks that's $3, I give a buck. If that's not enough, too bad.

0.0000

I don’t tip fast-food workers. Or anything with a drive thru. I do tip waiters/waitresses for doing a job & performing a service. Not someone who plucks pre-prepared shit off of a shelf and hands it to me.

None

In Australia we pay a decent wage so no one needs to tip. Ever.

can’t afford coffee at starbucks let alone a tip so the answer is zero

Do away with tipping and give workers a “living” wage.

I only tip people who perform above and beyond what they are paid to do, not people who get paid to do their job and do nothing more.

.5 cents

What pressure? No tip. No tip. No tip. There, easy.

Ppl doing a task you wouldn’t or opted out of doing for self. It’s not hard, it’s been like this our whole lives in US… A dollar goes a long way. Shouldn’t be controversial. If they’re hospitable and kind while performing the service give more. If they suck, don’t give. Easy.

If I’m picking up my food I ain’t tipping

If you simply paid people the right amount of money, they'd do the job with love instead of doing the job for tips like a circus animal. The USA gets away with paying only $2.13/fkn hour for tipped workers ffs. Tipping is dehumanizing and turns patrons and staff into assholes.

You don't tip counter service... ever. Period. Next question?

Simple … if the business has people serving you food you tip. All others are not necessary.

Our country has morphed into a service economy. Tips are part of the equation now, bc service providers rely on them as a portion of their compensation.

you already overpay for coffee why so you need to compensate an employee?

Here's a tip. Pay employees fair wages.

Tipping culture is the main reason why I never eat out. Things are expensive enough as it is.

if it's a service? you tip. nothing confusing about that. these people are just trying to subvert guilt for not tipping at all or tipping very poorly. 'oh, poor me, I didn't know you tip every service. However I'm going to continue to forget I heard that'

Never add a gratuity if the restaurant had included a service fee on their bill. Only give a gratuity in cash to the waiter who served you or to the kitchen staff. Def give a tip if you plan on returning, but never if the food or service is bad

With increased cost of living, companies tell prospective employees they will be paid a lower hourly rate plus tip for working at places like Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks….

A

Never at the bar used to be one of those solid rules

I tip because it goes directly to service workers. Coffee prices are up (like everything else) but the baristas aren’t to blame. The argument that tipping is stupid because the companies already charge too much, completely misses the point. Companies don’t benefit from tipping.

I’m going to start tipping at full service restaurants only (again).

I don’t tip a cent anymore... they should raise the prices and pay workers a proper wage.

I don’t need to tip my barista because we have normal wages and people don’t need to live off tips over here.

I got an extra $17 over 2 weeks. Thats how pressured you were.

THIS IS THE DUMBEST, SOFTEST AND WEAKEST THING I'VE EVER READ.... ARE YOU PEOPLE REALLY FEELING ANXIETY ABOUT THIS 😆 🤣 😂 THIS ISN'T NEW OR EVEN RECENT... WE'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS!!!

Starbucks $17-$23 per hour is a living wage Starbucks DOES offer health benefits, all u have to do is work 20hrs per week minimum and pay $40 per paycheck Starbucks gives 6 weeks maternity leave They even offer pretax payroll deductions to help cover commuting expenses No tip

Everyone gets 18% unless the service really stands out

Won’t tip a barista, but you’ll tip a bartender for simply popping open a beer…makes sense.

70 years ago when I delivered newspapers I got 5 cents a paper — I could keep 1 cent for myself. That’s a 20 percent tip!!!

Tipping is a reward for good service from the server. Pouring a cup of coffee isn’t really serving me anymore than any other fast food place. It’s bad taste to enforce tipping. No one feels overwhelmed by tipping.

Nothing - they should be paid a living wage- tipping is such an American thing - glad it’s not a mandated thing in Australia !

Tip the barista

I don't tip for a regular tall coffee. It's expensive as it is.

What about the drugs the sex trafficking of young children..the gangs, and criminals , illegals and terrorist that make it thru our OPEN southern border .. whose paying for 5 million people.. start reporting.. or you’ll been know for the cause

Pay a living wage.

My unhealthy compulsion to be liked, even by strangers I’ll never see again, makes me tip. One time I didn’t and I still feel bad about it

Not a chance in hell I am tipping on a $5 cup of coffee.

Yea subway, papa johns, qdoba and a few others have a tip option when going inside for a pickup. It’s nuts. They are literally just cashing you out and handing you your food

Christ will come back not with peace but a sword 🗡️

I'm not against tipping but the number of places that have added this and want a tip is crazy.

Why would I want to tip the Barista? I go into an establishment and pay what they require for the product. If they require a tip the price for their product is too low and they require me to subsidise their wages. Not happening

No tip at all. Learn from the Scandinavian countries! Change your society!

Only liberals could feel pressured by such a thing. Heck, they can feel like a man one moment, and a woman the next. If you think about it, there’s not much a liberal can’t feel.

Is the Barista paid for the job they do? Then no tip. Except something exceptional was done (hardly)

Nope. No tip if I am literally doing their job. Restaurants should pay their employees better and I wouldn’t cry about an increased price. It’s annoying af if they aren’t doing anything but taking an order and leaving it on the counter for me to retrieve.

This isn't a thing in the rest of the world...

15% of the bill or more if you can afford it. Duh

The best way to not feel pressure is to pay for your goods and leave.

“Overwhelmed”

Please tip your Uber/dash/grub hub/insta delivery drivers like you use to do for local pizza delivery person. A dollar tip is not nice. Those drivers pay 4 own car, gas, ins. Everyone will be happier! More delivery drivers = quicker packages

If I were to tip on every place I make my purchases I’d wind up bankrupt. I only tip when I dine in and when paying deliveries. The rest is just noise.

Just tip when appropriate duh ! If you don’t think you should you prob shouldn’t kinda logic remember?

Once I traveled outside of the United States I realized that tipping is a scam on the American public by industry which is furthered by poor policies from Government.

They want a tip at a pot shop...l told them...get a better job....they said money's not everything...it is...

The fact that in the modern age the tipping culture has persisted and employers aren’t paying liveable wages (e.g. pay rent and food and live) with all of the nonsensical arguments about price increases—we already do—thru tips… it’s absurd and we need to outlaw tipping.

'overwhelmed' huh? Who are these ❄️ who are getting overwhelmed at the cash registers after seeing the option to tip? Or are you, as always, manufacturing a crises where none exists?

It’s pretty simple to me. If they’re not making the waiter hourly wage of $2.15 an hour I ain’t tippin shit.

Raise the minimum wage to $20hr and do away with this tipping culture

That’s it…I’m putting a tip jar on my desk at work

I’m getting used to hitting “no tip”. Can’t tip every retail transaction in my life.

I max tip. I have the money, I appreciate a well made iced coffee an I know the baristas as im a regular. Most are putting themself through college on less than living wages. An every penny helps. 😊

O%

Considering everyone but servers make at least minimum wage none of them should be asking for tips.

American tipping culture is bewildering. Why would you tip the guy spending 30s making a coffee?

So I’m suppose to tip someone who takes my money and hands me my take out order ? Kinda sounds like their job. 😎

Places need to post their hourly wages the burger flippers are making on that pad too. Anything over 15, forget it.

Maybe if they were like waiters and made the 2.15 an hour would be obligated to tip them. But they are getting paid a regular wage. I click no on those kind all the time.

If I have to drive to a store, pick up my own things, pick up my own coffee, waiting line I sure as hell I'm not tipping. I will only tip if I am in a restaurant or having food delivered where everything is basically done for me

I leave a Chinese tip. (No tip)

I got gas the other day and the cashier had a tip jar sitting by the register. All she did was ring it up and take my money. It’s getting ridiculous.

Ridiculous! Customers are becoming de facto bonus employers

They flip the screen around and I see options for 22%, 25%, 28%, it's crazy!

Zero

20% minimum. Their job can suck

If a restaurant adds a “gratuity” to my bill, then not only do they get to walk back and remove it, but they also get a 0% tip. Be greedy and shady and you’ll get nothing.

Cmon man.Pretend it's your grandma.

Tipping in the US is causing customers increasing stress. Employers should pay their personnel adequate salaries to take the pressure off the clients. Employees have become accustomed to receiving generous gratuities and anyone failing to tip enough faces hostility

Maybe if minimum Wage was enough to live on then tipping wouldn't exist...But Under Biden...Who can afford Anything?

I just read an add for my local restaurant Christmas dinner 215 including tip. Why are we tipping take out dinners? I’m tired of paying high prices and tips on top. It’s ridiculous.

Tip for service that is worth it If you don't go above and beyond you get $0 You shouldn't expect to receive extra for doing a job you already agreed to do for a wage The fed gov isn't your mommy or daddy, if the job doesn't pay you enough to survive get another one

Nothing, everyone's getting paid $15 an hour now

We need to get rid of all tipping.

As little or as much as the consumer feels appropriate?

The automatic car wash has a spot to tip. For what

I don’t tip unless a waiter, bartender, or it’s a hotel deal is involved . (Tip) Get another job if they don’t like that .

You shouldn't tip your barista at all. It is the duty of an employer to pay their employees

'overwhelmed' I can just imagine people breaking down in tears not knowing how much to tip at the coffee shop

I go to sporting events and pay $14 for a beer - which the guy basically reaches into a cooler and hands me - and they think I’m tipping 15-20 percent on iPad for that? No way. Provide me with good service and I’ll tip. But I’m not just going to subsidize an employer’s salary.

I always tip for fear they will spit in my food.

Tip for a take out coffee. Absolutely 0 chance.

Look both ways before you cross the street. You’re welcome. tip

Imagine CNN as a restaurant? You’d never have to tip! Their service sucks

Tips don’t help them qualify for a mortgage. Better it come from their w2s

Prices are already way too high. I’m not tipping to someone who is a cashier. Sorry. A guilt trip placed on consumers by businesses. Ridiculous. I tip generously to waiters and waitresses,..not cashiers.

The more places that ask just makes it easier and easier to say no
