One in four Canadian adults is a teetotaler – seven million in total – and that number is growing

This article was published more than 5 years ago. Some information may no longer be current. So here's a friendly reminder that"holiday" and"celebration" need not be synonyms for"drinking."

People's relationship with alcohol is complicated. For non-drinkers, it is often even more complicated. The most common assumption is that teetotalers are former alcoholics. For the most part, they are not. A common reason people don't drink is their religious beliefs. Major religions like Islam and Sikhism eschew alcohol, as do some Christian denominations, such as Mormons and Baptists. Other religions preach moderation.

Some teetotalers simply don't like the taste of alcohol, the same way some people don't like the taste of broccoli. Others don't like the cost, and alcohol is pricey.

It's not a difficult choice when you've grown up in the chaos of an alcoholic home.

Some drink too little, some drink too much.

The world is too competitive now. Gen Z increasingly abstinent & will be the most intelligent in human history.

Love my tea

It's not compulsory to drink alcohol when at a party. It's not compulsory to have many. It's not compulsory to take the wheel after you had alcoholic beverages.

Becuz they're smart!

waters_wine Sulphites are not an allergen. The science on this is unequivocal. At high levels, yes, they do interact with other systems in the human body to amplify or trigger adverse effects. Should be noted that raisins & bacon contain literally 1000s times more. Sad editors didn't catch.

I spent my 20s being a wild man. Now I don't drink at all. I guess I am 1 in 4

Alcohol is poison literally

JJ_McCullough Those Canadians are making a good choice

I maybe have one or two glasses of wine a year. Bottom line is I just don't like alcohol. Can't tell you how many times people have called me a buzz kill at a party because I didn't want to drink. It's rude

Probably has something to do with growing Muslim population and, also, people smoking weed instead.

i quit going on all most 5 yrs now

So what?

because i prefer coca cola

JJ_McCullough Here’s to you! Some people can’t handle it and shouldn’t drink.

JJ_McCullough Never completely understood how alcohol is that much of a social lubricant. Been in situations during seemingly endless business/company dinners where any alcohol on hand definitely wasn't a social lubricant. At best, it was just a potential trap for dumb coworkers to fall into

The media is telling people that it's none of your business why people choose not to drink. That same media told us that it's everyone business whether others are jabbed with a fake vaccine. EnemyOfThePeople

JJ_McCullough Hopefully this isn’t fake news!

Cool story bro. Drinkin right now!

yup gave up alcohol during pandemic. not going back to it. have more energy, feel better and my bank account also seems healthier sorry booze firms and sorry big pharma firms i won't need any alcohol treatments from you 😜

With the exception of the few who refrain from sugar visibly motivated by fitness, one in four Canadian has no control over their alcohol consumption when they start so they avoid it altogether.

Alcohol should be illegal, but that's just my opinion. So many bad things come from drinking.

14 1/2 years since my last drink. Best thing I ever did was quit. If I could do it you can do it.

If it's none of my business then wtf is the point of this article?
