Business Insider SAIn 2001, the government of Tony Blair thought it was about to have a Nelson Mandela problem, newly released internal documents show.

Advisors to Blair suggested the South African government could be helpful – given it was already worried about Mandela's continued involvement in international affairs.In 2001, the government of the United Kingdom was trying to figure out what to do about Nelson Mandela, internal documents recently released by that country's National Archives show.

One solution, suggested an advisor to the then foreign secretary, would be to get the government of Thabo Mbeki involved, because it already had"wider concerns about Mandela’s interventions in international issues".
