'They've fallen so short on this issue': H-E-B employees say new company policy makes them work sick

An employee from a store outside of the San Antonio area started a petition in hopes of getting the grocer to change its COVID absence policy.An H-E-B employee says they were forced to work while they were sick with COVID-19 earlier this month or be penalized under the grocer's new absence policy.

"While I wasn't running a fever, I had terrible symptoms and by all means should have been encouraged to stay at home," the employee wrote inThe employee says their original goal was to get 1,000 signatures before presenting the petition to H-E-B's leadership. She now hopes to get 5,000 signatures or wait until the signatures stop coming in.If the woman had called out sick, they would have been penalized under H-E-B's step system.

The employee said they already had three steps against them and arrived to work with a positive COVID-19 test and a mask on. During a meeting with the store's leadership, she said they told her the policy was"out of their hands."
