The oil and gas producer must now check for culturally significant sites along the 260km route of the pipeline for the $5.5 billion gas project.

The oil and gas industry lobby group has taken aim at the mounting uncertainty over project approvals by the offshore regulator after Santos was hit with a fresh obstacle at its $US3.9 billion Barossa gas project in the Timor Sea.

The move comes just days before construction was due to begin on the pipeline, at the end of this month, and is requiring Santos to commission specialised experts in the emerging field to carry out the work, with no indications as to how long it will take. over drilling at the site after a court last year overturned an approval already granted by the regulator.

“This development will reverberate through the economy and have significant implications for much-needed new gas supply across Australia, threatening energy security, emissions reductions and the substantial economic benefits and new jobs that the gas industry can create,” she said.
