Waymo has a presence in the Phoenix-area, but officials didn't respond to multiple requests from the Phoenix Business Journal on the number of layoffs in the Valley.its Verily Life Science health unit and Intrinsic robotics unit,Pichai reportedly told employees on Monday that he consulted with Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page and members of the Alphabet board of directors about the need to trim its workforce.

"In that context, we made a set of decisions that might have been right if the trends continued," he said, according to CNBC. “You have to remember if the trend had continued and we had not hired to keep pace, we would fall behind in many areas as a company."The Phoenix Business Journal contributed to this report.
