Jacksonville Airport sees second busiest year ever

More than 6.5 million travelers come through Jacksonville International Airport in 2022, making it the second busiest year ever for the airport, falling behind only 2019.

A main factor in this increase in passengers came from multiple flights being added to the Jacksonville roster, thanks to the addition of Breeze Airways in March.— something that the Jacksonville Aviation Authority called"the single largest air announcement in the airport’s history."“We’ve seen new carriers enter the market, which has brought more passengers, obviously. But we’ve also seen existing carriers bringing in larger planes to Jacksonville,” said airport spokesman Greg Willis.

May saw the highest enplanement numbers, reaching over 302,000 passengers getting on a plane in Jacksonville, making the summer season especially busy for the airport. According to Willis, the overall numbers throughout 2022 are quite similar to those the airport saw in 2018, when things were gearing up for what turned out to be the airport's busiest year ever.

Willis says he expects this situation to be fairly similar, in that 2023 should be busier than 2022 was, but it’s still too early to tell if it will surpass pre-pandemic numbers seen in 2019. However, the Aviation Authority is making moves to combat challenges it has been battling for the last few years, particularly with parking, which should increase the success of the airport moving forward.

“Hopefully 2023 will bring more passengers, more planes, larger aircraft and more people to the region," Willis said."That's great for tourism, it's great for business. We're hopeful that 2023 will be even more successful in 2022."
