Speaking in the Commons earlier, his defence minister James Heappey said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt understand the army is"in urgent need of recapitalisation" and"there is a budget coming".

Asked about the US general's private comments on Monday, the prime minister's official spokesman said"yes" to Mr Sunak believing that the British Army is a top-level fighting force.

British Army has 'fallen behind' and 'needs investment' - defence secretaryEarlier on Monday the Tory chairman of the Defence Select Committee said the government should reverse 'swathing cuts' to the army because its equipment has become 'obsolete' and we are at 'war in Europe'. Since 1985 armed force numbers have gone from 334k to 141k a drop of 193k. Under labour the reduction was 40K so tories are responsible for about 80% of that reduction.
