President Ramaphosa has announced a raft of new measures to combat the country’s 'existential' power crisis, including the declaration of a state of disaster, a new electricity minister, and loans and incentives to move South Africans onto solar energy.

President Cyril Ramaphosa delivers his State of the Nation Address at the City Hall in Cape Town on 9 February 2023.In his State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa said a national state of disaster had been declared to respond to the electricity crisis. Treasury is expected to announce tax incentives for solar power, and will make adjustments to the"bounce back" loan scheme to allow businesses to apply for solar financing.

South Africa had over 200 days of load shedding in 2022, and not a single day without cuts since the beginning of 2023. The president said the Auditor-General would"guard against any abuses of the funds needed to attend to this disaster."The president said that to deal with the crisis, he was appointing a minister of electricity in the presidency to"assume full responsibility for overseeing all aspects of the electricity crisis response".

The minister of public enterprises will however still remain the shareholder representative of Eskom.Ramaphosa said that, as per his energy plan announced last year, government was"going to proceed with the rollout of rooftop solar panels".

I'm sure Joe Biden just threw billions at us for clean electricity development..?

We’ve been trying to connect our solar panels + inverters now for months! Eskom doesn’t come out, then eventually they came + it was load shedding! As if they didn’t know! Then next time went to wrong place!

Ramaphosa and Nhlanhla children of the establishment...with no clue about power !

That was hardly a ‘raft of new measures’? Apart from appointing a new well paid puppet in his office we still have no idea how Eskom will produce more electricity!! And how long since he cancelled Davos? For this? 🙈🙈🙈VoetsekANC

Nothing will work if you don't get mafias out of there😈😈😈

How is it possible if SA itself caused the crisis?

Minister upon minister of lining pockets. Remove your old dilapidated house of corrupt ministers.

Mr President first task for minister of electricity - let SA know what mining companies & big industries paying eskom per KWH. Do they all have similar deals to South32 who pays only 17c / kwh . SA households pay nearly R3/kwh. Why are poor subsidising multinationals?
