A case involving thousands of retired Swiss women claiming their government's insufficient climate action violated their human rights will be heard.

The case, which campaign group Greenpeace initiated on behalf of the women, will be heard on March 29 in the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.Switzerland argues the case is inadmissible, saying the case is without foundation and questioning whether the applicants count as victims.

- They say the women's age and gender places them in one of the categories cited by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as being at highest risk of temperature-related mortality. It also cites the IPCC saying heatwaves are becoming more frequent due to climate change.
