The iconic red envelopes will be disappearing from mailboxes in September.

Years before it ever streamed TV shows or movies, Netflix launched with a simple idea: Replace the outmoded DVD rental experience by delivering DVDs to customers and letting them mail them back when they were done . Soon, Netflix’s red envelopes were everywhere, and Blockbuster, the dominant DVD rental company of the era, was on the ropes.

“Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members but as the business continues to shrink that’s going to become increasingly difficult,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos wrote in the blog post Tuesday. The DVD business was also the subject of one of the most infamous moments in Netflix’s history: When it said it would spin off its DVD service as a new company called Qwikster, separating its streaming and DVD offerings. Customers revolted, and the DVD service stuck around as part of the main Netflix service .

This is sad. But for anyone wanting to continue renting Blu-Rays and even 4K Blu-Rays, I highly recommend GameFly.

I discovered international cinema via Netflix DVD's. But that's also back when their recommendations for new content were spot on.

This just in: Blockbuster and RedBox also shutting down 🤣

There is not as much need for DVD's of older movies and TV shows, with so many free movies and shows on you-tube, Tubi and Pluto. Also check out BIng video and Daily Motion. 'They Live' with Meg Foster is on Bing video.

I'm signing up just to check out these dvds and never return em netflix

Tragic and short-sighted. They better not destroy that library! At least auction it off and preserve the legacy.

Surprised this was still a thing.

They used to have the greatest selection of DVDs. Rare issues, deep cuts. It was amazing. Now, every day I think of a movie I want to watch but can’t because it’s not streaming.

BittrScrptReadr Maybe Blockbuster can come back to fill this niche! 🤣

Oh that’s just great! (throwing my pager at the wall)

Ok

End of an era.

It was still a thing?

Aww. Sad.

My mom will be bummed. (not a joke)
