The Supreme Court on Monday rejected appeals from oil and gas companies that are fighting lawsuits from state and local governments over whether they can be held responsible for harms resulting from global warming. In the lead appeal, Exxon Mobil Corp. XOM and Suncor Energy Inc. SU sought to transfer a suit by two Colorado counties and the city of Boulder. The suit contends the companies should compensate taxpayers for the increased cost of maintaining roads and fighting forest fires because of the effects of climate change.
