Eskom is not just a feeding trough for the ANC but for private companies as well which have been feeding from the ailing utility, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan told Parliament's standing committee on public accounts on Wednesday.
"But at the same time, it’s important to recognise that multinational institutions such as ABB, SAP and local companies like Trillian, the construction companies with whom some litigation and some negotiations are still continuing between Eskom and themselves and a plethora of others, are and have been feeding off the Eskom situation itself,” he said.
"And that’s a fact that anybody can see and any attempt by smearing people on the outside in order that he can justify himself would, at the end of the day, come across very poorly if one takes an objective look at it. Load shedding will cost the economy 0.2 percentage points growth and add about 0.5 percentage point to inflation this year, according to the Reserve Bank. The energy crisis has also been identified as the single biggest contributor to the latest data from Stats SA that recorded a rise in unemployment in the first quarter of this year.
