To the dismay of some and the delight of others, there's no denying that sneakers have infiltrated the Wall Street wardrobe. But not all sneakers are created equal, Cadmus said.

Women should also own mix-and-match suits, although black is OK for women, Cadmus said. But wearing a blazer with trousers and a dress shirt is too formal and, frankly, outdated. A knit is stretchier and form-fitting — what you'd think of as a sweater, Cadmus said, versus fabrics like poplin or muslin that are common in more formal tops.

"The silk shell with the bow on it is the equivalent of wearing a tie with your suit," said Cadmus."You need to take it down a notch. It doesn't need to be so formal."This tank knit from Max Mara is an example of ayou could replace one of those old shells with, said Cadmus. Though shoulders are generally OK to show, you'd want to at least bring a blazer or jacket to go over it.
