He said the value journalism brings in terms of holding power to account and informing its citizens is well understood, certainly in Western democracies. “Trusted, quality journalism is quite literally a part of the fabric of our societies and has been for hundreds of years,” said MacLeod. “And I think not only journalism but the pointed dissemination – how it’s shared and propagated – is equally important in terms of the trust that people get from the information.

Michael Beckerman, chief client officer at Torstar, spoke about how his organization is advising marketers on the importance of advertising with Canadian media. “We’re asking more [marketers] to be informed and purposeful, to seek out Canadian-owned and operated sites because you’re going to enjoy a halo effect in terms of integrity and trustworthiness when your ad is in the Toronto Star app or in the National Post app.

Caroline Gianias, president of Radio Connects, a not-for-profit trade association for the commercial radio industry, spoke about the importance of reaching Canadians outside of the big cities. For media planners – those responsible for placing ads and reaching the right audiences – Torstar’s Beckerman said this could be one of the greatest times in their careers.Article content
