JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance Dada Morero once again accused the city’s previous administration of spending city funds carelessly. He delivered the city’s proposed budget of over R80 billion for the 2023/24 financial year.Morero opened his budget speech by alleging that the Democratic Alliance -led coalition left the city’s coffers empty.Morero insisted that the DA-led multi-party coalition was at the forefront of stifling the city’s funds.
“Please close your eyes and imagine being left with just R5 billion. One day you wake and realise that you are broke and there are urgent bills to be paid.” However, newly-elected DA caucus leader Belinda Kaiser-Echeozonjoku said Morero’s accusations were baseless. While the city’s budget was increased to R80 billion, it would need to strengthen its revenue collection to avoid another financial crisis.
