KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 35 undocumented immigrants were detained following a raid at the Selangor Wholesale Market in Seri Kembangan on Wednesday (June 14).

Immigration director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the operation was conducted at about 4.45am on Wednesday."Some 35 of them aged between 21 and 52 were detained for various offences. Those arrested were 17 Myanmar nationals, 13 from Bangladesh, two Indian nationals, two Indonesians and a Yemeni," he said in a statement Friday .

The raiding team faced various challenges including attempts by some foreigners to escape amidst heavy rain, he said. "There were those who escaped. We also inspected 42 men and three women from Myanmar who were UN High Commissioner for Refugees card holders," he said. Among the offences were not possessing identification documents, overstaying and other Immigration offences, Ruslin said.

"Those detained have been placed at the Semenyih Immigration depot for investigation and further action," he said.
