Leimkuhler worked at the NYSE, helping turn the organization from a nonprofit its members own into a global exchange, then as the chief financial officer at Marsh, one of the world's largest insurance brokers. In 2017, with the idea of applying all her business expertise, she left to think about doing something that might address a significant societal issue.
Berkowitz has an impact background. She is a serial social entrepreneur, including being a former innovator-in-residence at CARE; a policymaker in the Obama administration advising on the internet and innovation; a consultant at McKinsey; and an investment advisor to Eric Schmidt's family office. Berkowitz was thinking about where the business opportunities were to address societal problems.
