Finance minister Enoch Godongwana says there are too many state owned companies – but government is dragging its feet to do anything about it.

The minister of finance, Enoch Godongwana says that there are too many state-owned entities in South Africa – but the government is yet to draw up an agreed-upon list of state entities and departments that should be closed or rationalised.

“Whereas this process is starting up, there is at this stage no agreed-upon list of entities that should be rationalized or closed. Thus, it would be premature to name any specific entities that might be under consideration.”especially given our fiscal circumstances,” said the minister. Despite Godongwana indicating no concrete plans to rationalise SOEs, some efforts have started to materialise in some departments.

SEDFA’s role would be to provide support – both financial and non-financial – to small enterprises, including co-operatives.
