Recently-announced rent increases have added to Flea Market vendors’ anxiety.

Longtime vendor Delia Arjorno sells candies, flavored nuts and handmade gummies at the Berryessa Flea Market in San Jose on June 14. Editor’s note: This story is part of the annual Mosaic Journalism Workshop for Bay Area high school students, a two-week intensive course in journalism. Students in the program report and photograph stories under the guidance of professional journalists.

But as property owners move forward with plans to redevelop most of the land for housing and commercial space, the vendors are in a panic on where to relocate. A recently announced rent increase is adding to the anxiety.Surrounded by the candies, flavored nuts and handmade gummies she sells in her stand, long-time vendor Delia Arjorno said she worries that she and her husband will not be able to afford medical care if they are displaced.

“Right now we can barely afford my medicines and everything in the hospital is very expensive. Without work, we will not be able to afford to buy medicines and treatments,” said Arjorno. “We are just eating, maintaining and surviving with the rent paid, and little is for us,” said Castellon.
