The late singer took an interest in Fort Worth’s Coyote Drive-In.

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band performed at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco on May 4, 2013. His North Texas shows over the years attracted tens of thousands of fans, known as Parrotheads.

“Hey, man!” he said. “I’m in Palm Beach. Have a show out west. Stopping in NOLA tonight on the way. Thinking about swinging by Fort Worth tomorrow to check out the drive-in.” I paused for a moment, trying to wrap my mind around his hard-to-follow itinerary, before responding: “I’m in New Orleans!”Jimmy followed with an enthusiastic invitation to get dinner, but I already had plans with 10 of my buddies. “Can I join?” he asked.

We talked for another hour, before he left and I went back to my friends. A few months later, the Coyote Drive-In theater opened — and it has been a great staple of entertainment for Fort Worth ever since.
