Established next to the future downtown plaza, the new Mill Market location will offer locally grown fresh produce, handmade items, and other artisanal goods every Saturday

City officials cut the ribbon on a long-awaited project Saturday morning as the Soo Market, formerly known as the Mill Market, opened its doors on Brock Street.

The new hub aims to provide year-round opportunities as a farmers' market and features dozens of area vendors, crafters, and foodies. The Mill Market struck a deal to move from the former fish hatchery on Canal Drive to the site of the future downtown plaza in March 2020. The current space used to be operated by the Sault's Greyhound intercity bus terminal and repair facility, and more recently Union Cab.Denise Martel, vice-chair of the Soo Market Board of Directors, is hopeful the new space will provide local vendors with the tools to expand their businesses.

“It supplies many with their livelihood,” she said. “These businesses then hire employees. It has given some businesses their start before opening their own storefronts. Buying local also benefits the environment. Our market greatly contributes to a thriving Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma.”“I’m confident the Soo Market will thrive in its new location, and the spin-off effects that it represents to our downtown will have a tremendously positive effect,” he said.
