Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg says he’ll reorient company toward encryption and privacy, outlines shift in online post

FILE- In this May 1, 2018, file photo, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg delivers the keynote speech at F8, Facebook's developer conference, in San Jose, Calif. In his first State of the State address, Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state's consumers should get a piece of the billions of dollars that technology companies make off the personal data they collect. California-based Facebook and Google aren't commenting on the idea.

The moves -- outlined in broad strokes rather than as a set of specific product changes -- would shift the company’s focus from a social network where people broadcast information to large groups of people, to one where people communicate with smaller groups and their content disappears after a short period of time, Zuckerberg said.

[U.S. regulators have met to discuss imposing a record-setting fine against Facebook for privacy violations] The announcement, in the midst of a crisis that Facebook is facing over the loss of public trust, comes with major risks and is also likely to be treated skeptically. Zuckerberg has promised to protect privacy before, but the company has landed itself in controversy after controversy. Many governments also oppose encryption, and Facebook may end up getting blocked in some foreign countries as a result of the move, a risk Zuckerberg acknowledged in his post.

Describing the changes using the metaphor of transforming Facebook from a town square into a living room, Zuckerberg wrote, “As I think about the future of the internet, I believe a privacy-focused communications platform will become even more important than today’s open platforms. Privacy gives people the freedom to be themselves and connect more naturally, which is why we build social networks.”

Zuckerberg became a multi-billionaire from selling data base of Facebook users for huge sums of money. Zuckerberg has been pretty busy counting his billions, instead of finding a solution for the privacy of Facebook users. Let no one belief that he's interested in our privacy.

This is great and good. Keep doing marvelous work in changing live, & changing the world.

Hilarious. Welcome to the Idiocracy

Bullshit

As if you didn't do enough damage already. F***k FB.

Zuckerberg suddenly caring about customer privacy 🙄. Locking the stables after horse has bolted... I mean stolen....

Would be nice. I’ll believe it when I see it, though.

Zuckerberg’s greatest invention is bad content on the Internet.

My spidey-sense says “smoke & mirrors.” I am highly skeptical at best.

Sounds like facebook needs to talk to WorldFlix $WRFX

No thanks. I'm done with leakbook.

On secure data storage: “we've chosen not to build data centers in countries that have a track record of violating human rights like privacy or freedom of expression.” User data should be secure from everyone, including facebook not selling it for ads. userdata

Lol

Right. And if you believe little Markie F**kerberg, you’ll believe anything.

I don't trust him nor do I believe him. He has a long history of 'mistakes' followed by apologies, and a history of failing to take actionable steps to remedy those mistakes.

How about reorienting my timeline to chronological posts and leave it that way facebook?

It's real time lip service encryption

Sure he will...

Zuck sold out America, Britain, Miramar, Venezuela ALL for profit. FB is ground zero for the 'Cyber-Culture-Wars' and he should have his citizenship stripped.

Just give me right to be forgotten. And assure me that all my history and transactions will be actually wiped. When you have actually encrypted systems to the level where even your company cant read my data, I shall be back to FB.

You’re too late, Sirius. Too. Late.

Unless you're having some kind of on-line garage sale, Facebook absolutely sucks!... Mark.

Social media are ads companies, within the pretext of personal communication. I cannot imagine selling ads in 'encrypted' customers.

nytimes WSJ maddow NicolleDWallace SRuhle AliVelshi Some how I do believe one word that Zuckerberg says. The way I do not believe one word that Trump says I feel the same way about Zuckerberg.

MONOPOLY - This and all the other massive one-off corporations need to be divided. We are killing our country for the few very, very wealthy. NEWS FLASH - They don't give a sh*t. They WANT you dead, you are more trouble than you are worth.

Lies.

The problem isn't encryption -- they're giving the data away ON PURPOSE. Nobody has been hacking in to get it. It's right there on the table. Here you go, Cambridge Analytica! Here's all the data!

I’m sure there’s a shady twist. No thanks Zuck.
